Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso identifies strike force as key area of improvement with signing of Brayan León
In the high-stakes environment of South African football, Mamelodi Sundowns is a club that has long been synonymous with excellence. However, as the 2023 season unfolded, the team found itself grappling with a challenge that would ultimately necessitate swift, strategic action: the need for a stronger strike force. Thankfully, the arrival of Colombian striker Brayan León has begun to address this pressing concern.
Cardoso, who has taken the helm at Sundowns, has been vocal about the necessity for a potent attacking option, and the club's recruiting strategy was clearly focused on this goal during the January transfer window. Signed from Colombian club Independiente Medellín for a hefty fee exceeding R50 million, León's value has already begun to manifest.
During his tenure in Colombia, León established himself as a formidable forward, notching an impressive 33 goals and 17 assists over the course of 118 appearances. Nevertheless, the leap to a foreign league can often prove challenging, especially for strikers who must quickly adapt to new playing styles and conditions. Yet León appears to have bypassed any transitional difficulties, signaling his intent by scoring four goals in just his last two outings. He helped his new team secure victory in the CAF Champions League group stages, netting two goals against MC Alger, thus propelling Sundowns into the knockout rounds of the prestigious tournament.
Adding to his remarkable performance, León continued his streak by scoring another pair of goals in a tightly contested 2-1 victory over the Orlando Pirates. This win wasn't merely about the three points—it symbolized a significant moment in the season as it reduced the gap at the top of the league table to just three points for Sundowns, although the club still has a game in hand to secure even greater positioning.
In total, León has already struck six times in seven matches across all competitions since joining Sundowns. His incredible goal-scoring form has provided a much-needed boost for a club with aspirations of both local and continental triumph.
As the team prepares to face TS Galaxy in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16, scheduled to take place at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium, León’s contributions on the pitch will be front and center once again. In addition to his scoring prowess, his presence has injected fresh energy into the squad, an essential element as Sundowns competes in multiple tournaments simultaneously.
Cardoso has made it clear that depth within the squad is paramount for teams like Sundowns. He emphasizes the need for both quantity and quality among players to endure long seasons filled with taxing fixtures.
“A team like Sundowns this season — and last season Orlando Pirates were in the same situation, and Stellenbosch went far in the CAF Confederation Cup — when you play international competitions and try to reach the final stages of local competitions, you need a big squad,”he remarked.
This focus on squad depth was fueled by experiences from previous seasons, where teams faced challenges due not only to injuries but also due to the demands of playing in high-stakes matches. Cardoso highlighted that the goal of the management has been to strike a balance between depth and quality, ensuring that fatigued players can be rotated without facing a noticeable drop in performance levels.
While acknowledging some initial inconsistencies within the squad, particularly concerning the strikers, Cardoso is relieved to witness León finding form at a crucial juncture of the season.
“Regarding the strikers, León is in his best moment at Sundowns since he arrived. There was some inconsistency and uncertainty from our side about his capacity to become an asset. We are very happy that things are going well — he is helping the team, and there is a smile on his face,”Cardoso shared. His words resonate deeply with fans and players alike, reflecting the relief felt at the club as the new signing has settled into his role.
However, the impact of León is not solely about his individual performance. He’s part of a larger attacking framework at Sundowns that includes players like Peter Shalulile and Iqraam Rayners, both of whom are integral to the team's attacking identity. Cardoso expressed his confidence in Shalulile, stating,
“Peter is a player we know what we can get from him, and Iqraam Rayners was also important last season and just needs consistency to earn his space,”indicating that he recognizes the potential of his squad while planning for the future.
Building upon this foundation, the coaching staff, led by technical and tactical analyst Flemming Berg, worked diligently to identify León as the standout choice for bolstering the forward line. This decision wasn't taken lightly; it involved meticulous analysis of his playing style and ability to integrate with Sundowns’ strategy. Moreover, the team engaged in numerous discussions with León to gauge his personal goals and his willingness to embrace the challenges of moving to South Africa. Cardoso reflected on this process:
“We had several conversations with him to get to know the person he is and to understand whether the move to South Africa would appeal to him so that we could welcome him with open arms. Sundowns is a great environment to receive people. I felt that Brayan and I were aligned, and that helped him settle,”he noted.
The element of competition within the squad has also been a healthy aspect recognized by Cardoso. He emphasized that such competition keeps players on their toes and promotes performance.
“Even with competition, it is very healthy for Peter. Everyone in our structure understands that today is one day and tomorrow is another — and that is very important,”Cardoso concluded, emphasizing the necessity of resilience and adaptability in the pursuit of excellence.
In light of this renewed focus on their attacking potential, Mamelodi Sundowns is poised to challenge for silverware both domestically and on the continental stage. As the matches unfold, fans will undoubtedly be watching closely, eager to see how Brayan León shapes up against rival defenses. The synergy between the players and coaching staff promises a thrilling continuation of the season.
