Modiba Stresses Professional Focus as Sundowns Prepare for Mokwena Clash

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Aubrey Modiba underscores the necessity for professionalism against coach Mokwena.

Sundowns will face Mokwenaโ€™s MC Alger in their second CAF Champions League group-stage match on Friday, following their 3โ€“1 victory over St Eloi Lupopo at Loftus Stadium, which placed them at the top of Group C.

MC Alger, in contrast, faced a defeat in their initial group-stage game, losing 2โ€“1 to Al-Hilal last Friday.

This match marks the first encounter for Sundowns against Mokwena, who departed the club after the 2023/24 season, despite having led them to both a league title and the African Football League championship.

Modiba commented on the positive bond the team developed with Mokwena, acknowledging their understanding of his tactical approach.

โ€œWe had an excellent relationship with our coach, and itโ€™s going to be a nice feeling to play against him because itโ€™s never happened before. Everyone is looking forward to the game,โ€ stated Modiba.

โ€œThe guys have been discussing it, noting that it will be intriguing to see him on the opposite side. However, we are professionals now. Our priority is to secure a victory.โ€

He emphasized the challenge ahead, noting, โ€œWe are aware of his playing style. It will be a tough match. Competing in Algeria is always difficultโ€”North African games are quite challenging.โ€

Modiba reiterated that while emotions may play a role, Sundowns remain concentrated on their objectives.

โ€œWeโ€™ve got a determined team, capable of putting up a fight regardless of the coach. Though it will be nice to reconnect with him.โ€

The Bafana Bafana defender highlighted the significance of winning home games, considering the complications associated with away matches on the continent.

โ€œIt is crucial to win our first home game since away matches are typically challenging,โ€ Modiba remarked.

โ€œThe conditions, the pitchesโ€”everything poses a challenge. Yet, we donโ€™t lament or linger on those issues. Weโ€™ve accumulated enough experience in the Champions League to anticipate what lies ahead.โ€

โ€œAchieving victories at home provides us an advantage moving into future games, especially those away, where we are aware of the hurdles we may encounter. Hence, winning at home is exceedingly important.โ€
