Mokwena’s MC Alger Begin Champions League Campaign with Unexpected Loss
Rulani Mokwena’s MC Alger faced a surprising 2-1 defeat against Al Hilal during their CAF Champions League group-stage opener at Amahoro Stadium in Rwanda.
The match left Mokwena visibly frustrated, notably after a heated exchange with a member of Al Hilal's technical staff, which was diffused by Wendell Robinson, a recent addition to Mokwena’s own team.
Al Hilal, despite finishing the match with only ten players due to a reckless challenge from Salaheldin Alhassan, managed to maintain control. Mokwena's anger was palpable as he reacted to the incident from his technical area.
MC Alger struggled significantly, showcasing an uncharacteristically poor performance lacking creativity, which is not typical of teams under Mokwena’s guidance, particularly when compared to his tenure at Mamelodi Sundowns.
The match took place at a neutral venue due to ongoing instability in Sudan, highlighting the unusual circumstances surrounding the fixture.
Just before halftime, Abdelrazig Omer put Al Hilal ahead, scoring after connecting with a low cross from Jean Girumugisha.
MC Alger's first shot on goal didn’t come until the 49th minute from Kipre Zunon, reflecting their overall struggles throughout the match.
They managed to equalize in the 53rd minute when Oussama Benhaoua’s cross deflected off Mustafa Karshom, resulting in an own goal that marked Alger's first shot on target.
However, their level footing was short-lived. In the 75th minute, substitute Mohamed Abdelrahman, who had just come on, netted with his first touch from Steven Ebuela’s assist, allowing Al Hilal to regain the lead.
Despite being a player down, Al Hilal held their ground and secured a crucial win, positioning themselves at the top of Group C.
Mamelodi Sundowns now have an opportunity to claim the first place when they take on St Eloi Lupopo at Loftus Stadium this Saturday. A victory by more than two goals will allow them to take charge of the group.
