Mamelodi Sundowns' recent signing, Monnapule Saleng, has courageously addressed his critics after making the bold move from Orlando Pirates to join the Brazilian giants this January. This transfer has taken many Premier Soccer League fans by surprise, but Saleng is ready to embrace the challenge.
After spending the first half of the 2025-26 season on loan at Orbit College, the South African international chose to team up with the reigning Betway Premiership champions, a decision that has sparked plenty of conversation among fans and pundits alike. As the Brazilians aim to defend their title for an impressive eighth consecutive season, Saleng's addition is seen as a strategic move to enhance their already formidable squad.
Currently sitting second in the Betway Premiership table, Sundowns have racked up 26 points from 13 matches, just two points shy of the league leaders, Pirates. Moreover, the Soweto giants have also tasted success in domestic competitions this season, having clinched both the MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup titles under the guidance of their new manager, Abdeslam Ouaddou.
Saleng Fires Back at Critics
In a recent episode of The Pitchside Podcast, Saleng opened up about his mental toughness in the face of criticism, stating,
"I’ve learned to stay mentally tough and avoid being sidetracked by social media negativity. I focus on consistent performances instead."
He acknowledged the immense pressure that comes with wearing the jersey of one of South Africa's storied clubs and the unique scrutiny that his performances attract.
Saleng shared his resolve to rise above negative opinions, expressing that he has no intention of walking away from the beautiful game, despite the varying perceptions about his abilities. He said,
“While opinions about my game vary, I accept that they are beyond my control.
