Mamelodi Sundowns Coach Miguel Cardoso Confirms Mothobi Mvala's Injury Blow
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has confirmed a significant setback regarding defender Mothobi Mvala, who will undergo knee surgery following an injury sustained in the midweek defeat against Golden Arrows at King Zwelithini Stadium.
Mvala has seen limited action this season, managing only 46 minutes in the Betway Premiership after coming on as a substitute in the second half of the recent match.
His absence was noticeable during Sundowns' 4-1 victory over Richards Bay at Lucas Moripe Stadium this past weekend. This development is particularly concerning for Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, as the Africa Cup of Nations approaches and Mvala's experience is highly valued.
Cardoso indicated that Mvala had been following a conservative recovery program for a previous knee issue; however, the latest injury necessitates surgical intervention.
“Unfortunately, we have lost Mothobi. He will be submitted to knee surgery,” said Cardoso. “We tried conservative treatment, and things worked well, but unfortunately, there was an incident in the last match and this time surgery is required.”
In addition to Mvala's injury update, Cardoso reported positive news regarding Grant Kekana, Thapelo Morena, and Zuko Mdunyelwa, who are expected to return after the international break in October.
“Morena will be back quickly. I think Morena, Grant, and Zuko will probably be ready to compete after the break. We will take advantage of this period to prepare them,” he commented.
Cardoso addressed concerns regarding Ashley Cupido, who was stretchered off midweek due to a concussion.
“It was not a big thing. He didn’t faint or vomit, so he just needs a few days of rest before reintegrating into training,” Cardoso assured.
Despite the growing injury list, Sundowns have reclaimed the top position in the Betway Premiership table, accumulating 21 points from eight matches, one point ahead of Sekhukhune United, who have a game in hand.
Looking ahead, the Brazilians will focus on cup action as they prepare to host Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout Round of 16 at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday evening (20:00).
