Mthethwa Issues Heartfelt Apology After Chiefs' Knockout Exit

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa has apologised to the club’s supporters following their defeat to Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Knockout Round of 16, saying the players “did everything they could” and urged fans to remain patient.

Chiefs were eliminated 5-4 on penalties by Stellenbosch at a packed-to-the-rafters DHL Stadium on Sunday after a goalless draw over 120 minutes.

Sage Stephens proved to be the hero for Stellies, saving a sudden-death spot kick from Dillan Solomons to seal the win.

It was a bitter disappointment for the Amakhosi players, who walked off the pitch with their heads down after another early cup exit.

Chiefs also became the second big side to bow out on penalties this weekend, following Mamelodi Sundowns’ elimination at the hands of Marumo Gallants on Saturday.

Speaking to SuperSport TV after the match, a visibly emotional Mthethwa expressed his frustration and sorrow.

“I don’t know what to say because I’m truly disappointed,” said Mthethwa.
“There is nothing we can do. We tried our best. What can I say — we just didn’t have luck.”

Struggling to hold back his emotions, Mthethwa continued:

“I want to apologise to our fans. I know how much they wanted us to win this game. I’m really sorry — we tried our best.”

Mthethwa, who was part of the Chiefs side that lifted the Nedbank Cup last season, said the team would now shift their focus to defending that title and improving in the league campaign.

“We’ll try again in the Nedbank Cup next year and keep pushing in the league. What’s done is done.”

The 30-year-old midfielder also made a heartfelt plea to Amakhosi fans to remain patient and continue supporting the team.

“Please don’t give up on us. Please be patient. We don’t go onto the pitch to lose — but this is part of football.”

In another Round of 16 clash on Sunday afternoon, Richards Bay FC cruised into the quarterfinals after thrashing Chippa United 4-1 at the Umhlathuze Sports Ground.
