Former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Muhsin Ertugral has expressed optimism about the club's performance this season, indicating noticeable improvements compared to their previous campaigns. Speaking on #InsideSASoccer during an interview with Bra Jakes on Omniaudioafrica, Ertugral highlighted the positive strides made by Amakhosi, who have been struggling to secure silverware over the last decade.
After lifting the Nedbank Cup last season, despite not finishing in the top eight of the league, the Chiefs are currently sitting fourth in the Premiership standings with 24 points from 13 matches—just four points shy of league leaders Orlando Pirates, who still have a game in hand. Their triumph in the Ke Yona Cup also granted them a spot in this year’s CAF Confederation Cup, where they are currently positioned third in Group D with one point from two outings.
While acknowledging the improvements within the squad, Ertugral remains cautious about their continental ambitions, citing structural weaknesses that still need addressing. He noted,
“Although the team’s defensive organisation has improved, they struggle with effective entries into the penalty area, often playing at excessive speed without sufficient composure.”
Despite the evident signs of better cohesion, Ertugral pointed out that tactical refinements are still necessary. He expressed concern over the impact of mid-season transfers, suggesting it could undermine player confidence:
“Excessive recruitment mid-season can signal a lack of trust in the existing squad.”
Ertugral also stressed the importance of stability and leadership within the club, commending the seasoned presence of Bobby Motaung and the calm, strategic oversight of the chairman during his own time there.
As for the Chiefs' prospects in Africa, he asserted that competition on the continent entails rigorous demands, requiring a high level of organisational structure. He concluded,
“The current squad does not yet possess the pedigree required to win the CAF Confederation Cup,”
but added that progress in this competition would still be advantageous, fortifying team unity and offering valuable experience as they gear up for the following season.
