Munetsi Attributes Wolves' Struggles to Key Player Departures

Wolves and Zimbabwe midfielder Marshall Munetsi has admitted that the club’s poor start to the season can be attributed to the departures of key players – Matheus Cunha and Rayan Aït-Nouri.

Vítor Pereira’s side currently sits at the bottom of the Premier League table, having lost five matches and drawn two.

According to Munetsi, Wolves’ struggles can be traced back to the sale of their two best players during the off-season — Cunha’s £62.5 million move to Manchester United and Aït-Nouri’s £31 million transfer to Manchester City.

In an effort to rebuild, the club brought in defender Jackson Tchatchoua, versatile midfielder Ladislav Krejčí, and striker Tolu Arokodare on deadline day. Midfielder Fer López and winger Jhon Arias also joined earlier in the transfer window, though both are still adapting to the demands of Premier League football.

“I think the team has been facing difficulties over the past few seasons, especially at the start,” said Munetsi.

“This is something we have to change. If you look at our games, we’re always so close to getting a win, and it’s frustrating as a player. But there’s nothing you can do — it’s a marathon league. We still have many games to play, and I’m very confident we’ll come off the bottom of the table.”

However, Munetsi, who joined Wolves from French side Reims, says he has been encouraged by the team’s recent performances despite not securing victories.

“In the last three games, there have been a lot of changes, and obviously, we lost some key players from last season,” he explained. “It’s something the team needs to adjust to.”

Munetsi also spoke about representing Zimbabwe at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, with national team coach Michael Nees making it clear that their goal is to reach the knockout stages.

When asked what he would do if Wolves’ struggles continued while he goes away with Zimbabwe at the AFCON in Morocco, Munetsi made it clear that he remains fully committed to representing his country.

“I was born and raised in Zimbabwe,” the former Orlando Pirates versatile player said.
