Nemanja Matic achieved remarkable success during his time with Chelsea, including winning the Premier League twice, but his most memorable moment came during an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
During his second term with the club, Matic had significant achievements. However, despite coming close under Antonio Conte in the 2016-17 season, Chelsea couldn't replicate their FA Cup success from his earlier stint.
The Serbia international earned the man of the match accolade in the semi-final, with his stunning goal, Chelsea's fourth, stealing the spotlight.
Nemanja Matic on scoring a Wembley wondergoal
Matic secured a spot in the final with a stunning left-footed strike from 25 yards—one of the finest seen at Wembley. "I thought, ‘Let’s try it. Why not?’ I had to shoot at least once in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley," Matic recalls.
"It was unbelievable. But the best thing was that five minutes later, I could see one part of Wembley was empty, because the Spurs fans went home – and that was because of me! It will always be one of the best goals scored at Wembley, because it couldn’t be any better!"
His joyful expression after the goal revealed his pride in the moment, though it marked Chelsea's pinnacle in that FA Cup campaign.
Unfortunately, Chelsea fell short in the final against Arsenal, with Aaron Ramsey's late goal overshadowing Diego Costa's equalizer. Instead, Matic and Chelsea celebrated their sixth Premier League title, while they still sought the elusive seventh.
The following season, Chelsea clinched the FA Cup, but Matic found himself competing against them in the final while donning the Manchester United jersey.
Now, at 37, Matic continues to showcase his skills with Sassuolo in Serie A, following stints with Roma and Ligue 1 clubs Rennes and Lyon, demonstrating no intention of retiring anytime soon.
