Newcastle United Eyes Major Saudi Investment in Youth Academy by 2026

Newcastle United's owners, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia, are planning to strategically invest in a key area of the club by 2026, as reported by national media.

Since taking control of the club in late 2021, the PIF has significantly improved the Magpies' recruitment and average league standing, culminating in their entry into the Champions League during their first full season.

However, as 2026 approaches, the Middle Eastern owners are setting their sights on enhancing investments that bolster the academy's infrastructure.

The key area of investment Newcastle United are focusing on for 2026

Big-name signings often steal the spotlight in football, exemplified by notable acquisitions like Sandro Tonali and Alexander Isak. Yet, what resonates most with a passionate fanbase, particularly at St James' Park, is witnessing homegrown talent thrive within the first team.

Despite Newcastle's impressive history of youth development, recent years have seen a lack of success in this area, with only a few academy graduates, like Lewis Miley and Elliot Anderson, making a mark. The latter was sold to Nottingham Forest due to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

According to reports, PIF's intentions to reinvest in this lucrative market by enhancing academy infrastructure in 2026 have emerged. This comes as Paul Midgley, the current head of youth recruitment, has declined an offer to join his former Manchester City colleague, Jason Wilcox, in a similar capacity at Manchester United.

Midgley’s decision to remain at Newcastle comes after positive discussions with the club's management about upcoming investments in his department later this year.

Insider insights suggest that Midgley was among “10 serious candidates” for the role at Manchester United, indicating how pivotal his retention is for Newcastle amidst ongoing competition from rivals like Sunderland and Middlesbrough for top young talent.

With upcoming changes from PSR to a Squad Cost Ratio, time is of the essence for PIF to expedite their focus on academy investment.
