Nkota Shines in Bafana Bafana's 3-1 Victory Over Zambia
Mohau Nkota was instrumental in Bafana Bafana's 3-1 friendly win against Zambia at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday. The player, who recently transferred to Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia after leaving Orlando Pirates, entered the match in the second half and made an immediate impact, scoring one goal and assisting another.
Bafana Bafana took the lead just before halftime through Oswin Appollis, who calmly finished to put the hosts ahead. Shortly after Nkota's introduction, he scored a spectacular goal 16 minutes into the second half, cutting inside and unleashing a strike into the far corner, doubling the South African lead.
Nkota also provided the assist for Bafana’s third goal with an in-swinging corner that Sphephelo Sithole converted with a header.
Zambia fought back, managing to score one goal in the 90th minute when Joseph Banda capitalized on a defensive oversight, maneuvering the ball past goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.
The Zambian team, led by former Orlando Pirates midfielder Perry Mutapa, showed resilience and intensity, striving to break Bafana’s rhythm. However, a moment of brilliance from Sipho Mbule facilitated Bafana’s first goal, as he skillfully evaded his marker to set up Appollis just before halftime.
Bafana head coach Hugo Broos made strategic changes at the start of the second half, substituting Nkota for the goalscorer Appollis, while Sipho Chaine replaced Ronwen Williams, and Thalente Mbatha came on for Teboho Mokoena, who celebrated his 50th cap for the national team.
Despite Zambia's attempts to level the score, including a near miss from Fashion Sakala, Bafana showcased their attacking prowess with Nkota's goal and his assist which secured the victory.
This friendly was an important fixture for Bafana Bafana as they prepare for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, scheduled to take place from 21 December to 18 January.
