In a decisive statement, the South African Department of Transport has confirmed that senior drivers over the age of 70 will not face any new or stricter requirements for renewing their driver’s licenses. This clarification comes in response to misleading claims circulating on social media.

All Drivers Subject to the Same Rules

Reports began surfacing suggesting that senior drivers would be required to undergo additional medical assessments starting January 2026. Some posts alarmingly claimed that failing to comply could result in penalties or the loss of driving privileges. However, Colleen Msibi, spokesperson for Minister Barbara Creecy, firmly refuted these assertions, stating:

“I’m not aware of any new regulations or any different categories for older and younger drivers.”
“The same rules apply to everyone...There simply isn’t any new regulation,”

Msibi urged the public to disregard the misleading information, which often references unrelated policies from other countries.

All You Need to Know About Driver's Licence Renewals

Here’s what you need to know regarding driver’s licence renewals in South Africa:

  • Renew your driver's licence at least four weeks prior to expiration.
  • Should you renew after the expiry date, a temporary licence will incur additional costs.
  • No driving test is required for the renewal process.
  • An eye test is mandatory; you may also opt to provide an eye report from an optometrist.
  • If your vision has diminished, new conditions may be applied to your licence.
  • The renewed licence typically takes four to six weeks to process.

Addressing the Licence Backlog

The Department of Transport is working tirelessly to eliminate a backlog of over 500,000 unprocessed licences caused by a malfunctioning printing machine in 2025. Following repairs, daily processing efforts have led to the issuance of approximately 834,000 licences, with plans in place to resolve outstanding applications by December 2025.
