Nuno Santos Opens Up About Tough Start with Sundowns After Loss

Mamelodi Sundowns New Signing, Nuno Santos, Reflects on Debut Loss

The 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder Nuno Santos, recently acquired for a reported R20 million from Vitória SC, experienced a disappointing start to his career at Sundowns during a 1-0 defeat against Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday night.

“It is mixed feelings because I wanted to start with a win,” Santos mentioned after stepping onto the pitch as a substitute early in the second half for Jayden Adams. Despite moments showcasing his skill, he acknowledged the disappointment of the loss.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t do it. But at the same time, I’m happy with my debut here. I’m very proud of the team — we tried for 90 minutes to get three points, sadly we couldn’t. But we will go again in the next game,” he added.

Santos Takes On Iconic Number 10 Jersey

Santos has taken on the number 10 jersey, once worn by star attacker Lucas Ribeiro Costa, a significant figure from the previous season. This change reflects the club's confidence in Santos as they aim for success in the 2025/26 season.

The challenging conditions of rain in Durban further complicated Santos's debut, impacting ball control. Golden Arrows leveraged the weather, displaying an energizing performance that disrupted the defending champions.

“It was a very physical, emotional game. Both teams had quality moments. It wasn’t easy, but I’m happy to have made my debut,” Santos stated.

Santos Vows to Win Over Fans

Dedicating himself to the Sundowns supporters, Santos expressed his commitment to contributing positively to the team. “I’m a guy that gives it all, with quality, always trying to assist my teammates. Always thinking about the team,” he remarked.

“I felt huge support from the fans, very different from Portugal but amazing at the same time. I want to thank everyone for welcoming me. I hope to bring joy to the team and the supporters,” Santos concluded.
