Despite the crushing defeat, Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is shifting his focus to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco this December, emphasizing the critical need for Nigeria to respect every opponent.
The Super Eagles were recently defeated by DR Congo on penalties in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoffs on Sunday.
Although Nwabali played his part by saving some penalties, the loss means Africa’s most populous country will miss the FIFA World Cup for the second consecutive time, having also missed the 2022 edition in Qatar.
The Impact of the World Cup Elimination
The elimination by Congo sparked immense grief among Nigerian fans, with videos of distraught supporters and tears circulating on social media. Football remains the single unifying sport for the nation’s 230 million people.
However, the three-time AFCON winners have a chance for immediate redemption. Next month’s tournament offers a fresh start, where Nigeria will be among the favourites after their impressive run to the final of the 2024 edition, where they lost to hosts Ivory Coast.
Nwabali’s Call for Caution at AFCON
Nigeria is placed in Group C alongside Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda. Nwabali, who plies his trade for South African club Chippa United, stressed that the Super Eagles cannot afford to underestimate their opponents.
“African football has developed a lot. Every country has developed its football. I feel like we are still going to fight in the group. There is no guarantee that we are going to top the group and win all our games,” Nwabali stated.
He highlighted Tunisia as a particularly tricky opponent, noting that the North Africans will be motivated to bounce back from their disappointing bottom-of-the-group exit in the previous tournament.
“Like I said, African football has developed a lot; no country is a small country; we really need to approach every game the same way,” the 27-cap international added.
The Drive for Redemption
Heading into his second AFCON, Nwabali understands the pressure on the Super Eagles to succeed after their recent disappointments.
“It is a big one for us, going into another AFCON after losing the final last year. It is not a nice feeling for us and Nigeria as a whole. Lots of people in Nigeria who know football, it was a bad moment for us,” he reflected.
He concluded on an optimistic note: “I feel like Nigeria will probably do well in the upcoming AFCON.”
