AmaZulu goalkeeper Richard Ofori has welcomed the strong competition from fellow shot-stopper Darren Johnson, saying every goalkeeper brings unique qualities that set them apart.
Johnson, who joined Usuthu from Chippa United, was the hero when AmaZulu held Kaizer Chiefs to a 1-1 draw in their last Betway Premiership match at FNB Stadium earlier this month.
The 26-year-old impressed by saving a first-half penalty from Glody Lilepo, diving to his right to keep his side in the game. His standout performance earned him the Man of the Match award.
Johnson’s opportunity came while Ofori was sidelined with a concussion, which kept the Ghanaian international out of action. Ofori also missed the Carling Knockout first-round defeat to Magesi FC before the recent FIFA international break.
With Durban City visiting Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon, AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane now faces a welcome selection dilemma, with Ofori returning to full fitness.
“It helps everyone to work hard and stay professional,” said Ofori. “It’s good that everyone is performing — not just in the goalkeeping department but throughout the entire team. Everyone is pushing each other to do better.”
He continued: “One thing about football is that every player has his own abilities and strengths. When everyone plays, they bring something different. It’s a good challenge for the team — it means the team is doing well, and we have to keep pushing together.
“The most important thing is the badge. It’s bigger than all of us. This club has been here long before we came; it’s the oldest in the league. We must respect the badge and fight for it. Whether there’s competition or not, whoever plays, we all have to pull in the same direction and win as a team.”
Interestingly, the upcoming clash between AmaZulu and Durban City brings a touch of history. The two sides were the first ever to play a match at Moses Mabhida Stadium prior to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
At the time, Durban City competed under the name Maritzburg United, before rebranding at the start of last season. On that day, Ivory Coast striker Brice Aka made history as the first player to score at the venue, giving Maritzburg (now Durban City) a 1-0 victory.
