Orlando Pirates coach Abdelsam Ouaddou has clarified the absence of Kamogelo Sebelebele and Tshegofatso Mabasa, saying both players remain an important part of the squad but are being carefully managed to maintain their fitness levels.
Mabasa has missed the last four matches, including the 3-1 victory over Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership at King Zwelithini Stadium, a result that lifted the Soweto giants to second place on the log.
The 2023/24 PSL Golden Boot winner last featured in the Carling Knockout quarterfinal against Siwelele early last month, where he came on in the 62nd minute, replacing Evidence Makgopa.
In Mabasa’s absence, Makgopa and Yanela Mbuthuma have led the attack effectively, with both featuring prominently in Wednesday’s win over Arrows. The latter scored twice, having replaced the former.
Meanwhile, Sebelebele, who started the season in fine form by scoring three goals in August, including one in the MTN8 second-leg semifinal against Mamelodi Sundowns, has also sat out the last two matches.
“Yes, they are part of the group,” said Ouaddou during a press conference in Durban.
“As I’ve said before, we have a lot of quality players. We select players based on our opponents and the specific game plan.
“Regarding Sebelebele, he’s not out of the team — he’s just being rested. He remains very much part of the squad.”
It remains to be seen whether Sebelebele and Mabasa will return to the matchday squad when Pirates face Richards Bay in the Carling Knockout semifinal at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Sihle Nduli, who suffered an injury against Arrows, has been sent back to Jozi for further injury assessment, having been pulled out on the stroke of half-time.
