Orlando Pirates Head Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou Proud Of Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s CAF Nomination
The 20-year-old Pirates vice-captain, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, has received a notable nomination for the CAF Young Player of the Year award, joining a talented group of ten players from across Africa and Europe, including notable contender Tylon Smith.
Despite having less than two full seasons of professional football experience, the KZN-born defender has significantly impressed both fans and football analysts alike.
“It’s a fantastic gift for him. First of all, it proves that when we are working daily, we are professional, taking care of our lifestyle, and working hard. I think it’s a fantastic gift for the club as well. We should not forget that he represents Orlando Pirates, and as an ex-central defender, I am certainly proud of him,” commented Ouaddou.
Mbokazi was appointed vice-captain of the team ahead of the 2025/26 season, demonstrating Ouaddou's strong belief in his capabilities, both individually and for the team’s success.
“The advice I give him is to keep believing in his potential, stay humble, and continue working hard. Football can change quickly, and while you can achieve great heights, you can also fall swiftly. Respect football, and it will respect you,” Ouaddou advised.
In addition to his club achievements, Mbokazi has also secured a regular position in Bafana Bafana's squad under coach Hugo Broos, establishing himself as a key figure in the left centre-back role as the AFCON approaches in Morocco this December.
Currently, Mbokazi is anticipated to play an essential role as Orlando Pirates prepare to challenge a 3-0 deficit against St Eloi Lupopo in their upcoming CAF Champions League second-leg match scheduled for Saturday at Orlando Stadium.
