January in South Africa signals the notorious back-to-school season, and it is a time when many parents brace themselves for the financial strains that come with new uniforms and stationery. With rising costs and tight budgets, the latest Grade 1 stationery list has left many parents across Mzansi in disbelief.

On January 4, 2026, TikTok user @fancyzeee shared a jaw-dropping video revealing a Grade 1 stationery list that exploded with over 29 required items — among them, not just the usual pens and books, but also a Hula Hoop and a skipping rope! This extensive list has parents questioning how such a long tally is necessary for a young learner just starting school.

Back-to-School Financial Pressures Unveiled

A recent survey by 1Life showed that 88% of South African parents are struggling with back-to-school expenses, cutting spending in other areas just to make ends meet. The survey reveals that many respondents, particularly single parents or sole breadwinners, shoulder the burden of these costs alone.

Remarkably, half of the surveyed parents are still grappling with debts from previous school-related expenses, indicating that the financial strain is a continuous battle. As the new academic year kicks off on January 14, it seems many parents will need to dig deeper into their pockets, with only about half of the items on their lists checked off.
