Hollywoodbets Sharks Interim Coach JP Pietersen Faces Early Challenges
JP Pietersen, the interim head coach of the Hollywoodbets Sharks, has acknowledged that his inaugural week in charge proved to be quite the test after recently taking over following John Plumtree’s departure.
In his debut match, Pietersen guided the Sharks to a narrow 28-23 victory over Saracens in the Investec Champions Cup at Kings Park, aided significantly by the expertise of the Springbok backline.
Pietersen assumed his new role earlier than anticipated, stepping in for Plumtree who departed following a disappointing loss to Stade Toulousain last week, despite initially planning to stay until the season's conclusion.
Having led the junior team to success and earned respect within the squad as well as among coaches and management after their Currie Cup triumph last year, Pietersen was viewed as a natural choice for the interim role.
“It was a 100 percent testing week,” Pietersen remarked post-match.
“There were many moving parts in a short time – with players arriving and a coach exiting. However, having been a player myself, I can relate to what the players think and need.”
“Clarity is what all players desire — knowing the goals and the plan ahead. Once that’s clear, everything becomes more manageable.”
All of the Sharks’ tries were scored by Springbok stars, including Siya Kolisi, Aphelele Fassi, Edwill van der Merwe, and Grant Williams. Notably, Williams’ try capped a powerful midfield advance by Ethan Hooker, who deftly set up the scrumhalf.
George Whitehead also played a crucial role with dependable kicking, contributing conversions that helped maintain the Sharks' lead throughout the match.
Additionally, the match marked a significant milestone for Andre Esterhuizen, who achieved his 100th appearance for the Sharks and was honored with the captaincy during this landmark game.
Saracens mounted a late push for a comeback but faced a resilient Sharks defense. Despite numerous infringements and mounting pressure, Pietersen's team held firm, successfully defending a final lineout before kicking the ball into the stands to secure a memorable home victory.
“That's the nature of rugby — it's unpredictable,” Pietersen commented on the nail-biting conclusion. “It encapsulates what I've been asking from the team — to fight until the very last minute. Though we had some shortcomings, the character displayed by the players was exceptional.”
“You cannot imagine what that win meant for the group in the changing room afterward.”
