Orlando Pirates Secure Convincing 3-0 Win Against Lioli in CAF Champions League
Orlando Pirates secured a commanding 3-0 lead over Lesotho’s Lioli in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round match at Toyota Stadium on Saturday.
The star of the match, Tshegofatso Mabasa, who was selected to start ahead of Evidence Makgopa, netted two rapid goals within four minutes during the second half, effectively dismantling Lioli’s defense.
Oswin Appollis capped off the scoreline with a third goal during injury time, striking a powerful shot into the top corner after a well-timed assist from Tshepang Moremi.
Pirates had opportunities to take the lead much earlier, having squandered several clear chances in the first half against the Lesotho side. The match took place in Bloemfontein due to Lioli's home ground not meeting CAF requirements, a decision taken for logistical reasons.
Fresh from their triumph in the MTN8 final against Stellenbosch, Pirates created various scoring opportunities. Appollis had an early attempt that went astray, while Thabiso Lebitso was thwarted in close proximity by goalkeeper William Huni. Thalente Mbatha also came agonizingly close but hit the side-netting, causing concern that missed chances might come back to haunt them.
Heading into the second half, Pirates made a strategic substitution, bringing on Moremi, who had previously scored twice off the bench in the MTN8 final. This change proved effective, as Pirates soon made their breakthrough.
In the 53rd minute, Mabasa eluded defenders to connect with Deon Hotto’s corner, heading it in at the near post to give Pirates the lead. Just four minutes later, he doubled the tally with a well-placed finish into the far corner following a fantastic assist from Relebohile Mofokeng.
Appollis, who had previously assisted Moremi for his two goals in the MTN8 final, turned goal-scorer this time, delivering the third goal from another excellent setup.
With a comfortable three-goal cushion and a dominant display throughout the match, Pirates well managed their advantage as the game concluded without further concerns. They will prepare for the second leg at Orlando Stadium next weekend with an advantageous position.
