Orlando Pirates Will Return to the Moses Mabhida Stadium Later This Month
Orlando Pirates will return to the Moses Mabhida Stadium later this month after Durban City confirmed that their upcoming Betway Premiership fixture has been moved to the iconic venue.
The clash at the 2010 FIFA World Cup stadium will take place on Saturday, 29 November, with kick-off scheduled for 15:30.
In a statement, the club said the “decision to move the high-profile encounter follows the resounding success of last month’s sold-out fixture at the same venue, which created a spectacular and unforgettable atmosphere” during their match against Kaizer Chiefs.
Although City lost that match — with Flavio da Silva scoring in the 88th minute to seal victory for Chiefs — the occasion drew a massive crowd and created one of the most memorable atmospheres of the season.
With Pirates currently in fine form and sitting second on the Betway Premiership log, City’s management opted to move the fixture from their regular home ground, Chatsworth Stadium, which has limited capacity and cannot accommodate the large number of supporters expected to attend.
Club chairman Farook Kadodia expressed his excitement about hosting another major football spectacle at Moses Mabhida.
“After the incredible event we witnessed last month, with the stadium packed to capacity and roaring with passion, there was no question about where we should host this fixture. Our fans deserve nothing less,” said Kadodia.
“Moses Mabhida is an iconic landmark, not only for Durban but for South African football. Hosting this match there is a commitment to our supporters, allowing many more of our faithful fans to be part of a grand sporting occasion.
“We’re building a strong connection with our community, and we want as many people as possible to experience top-flight football in a world-class facility. We’re expecting another electrifying atmosphere and encourage all our supporters to secure their tickets early. Let’s paint Moses Mabhida in our colours once again and push the team to victory.”
The Moses Mabhida Stadium holds fond recent memories for Orlando Pirates, who defeated Richards Bay 1–0 there last Saturday to book their place in the Carling Knockout final.
Meanwhile, for Durban City, their loss to Kaizer Chiefs marked their second league defeat at the venue, following an earlier loss to AmaZulu last month.
