Orlando Pirates brought the curtain down on the season with a 1-1 draw against Magesi at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Buccaneers, under the guidance of caretaker coach Mandla Ncikazi, played out a thrilling encounter with the Dikwena Tsa Meetse, who won the Carling Knockout this season.
Patrick Maswanganyi scored the opening goal for Pirates in the seventh minute with a stunning strike from outside the box from a smart free kick that saw Magesi drift back after a decoy by Relebohile Mofoekeng. The goal was a testament to the team’s attacking prowess and growth, which they showcased in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Magesi pulled level in the 32nd minute through former Kaizer Chiefs winger Edmore Chirambandare, who drilled a clinical goal after a break attack.
The Zimbabwean international’s strike was a reminder of his quality, having previously scored against Pirates in the Carling Knockout last year.
The first half ended 1-1, with both teams having created several scoring opportunities.
In the second half, both teams came out strong, but despite creating chances, neither side could find the back of the net.
Coach Mandla Ncikazi made several changes, introducing Tshegofatso Mabasa and Yanga Madiba, and later Thuso Moleleki and Karim Kimvuidi, in an attempt to find a winning formula.
However, the Buccaneers failed to capitalize on their chances, and the game ended 1-1.
The draw meant that Pirates finished the season in second place with 61 points after 28 matches. Despite not winning the league, the Buccaneers had a successful season, winning the MTN8 Cup and reaching the semifinals of the CAF Champions League.
This impressive run will see them participating in the Champions League again next season, alongside Mamelodi Sundowns. Stellenbosch and Kaizer Chiefs will represent South Africa in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Magesi, on the other hand, finished the season in 12th position with 31 points.
Despite not finishing in a top position, Dikwena Tsa Meetse had a successful season, winning the Carling Knockout.
The team’s victory in the cup competition was a highlight of their season, and they will look to build on this success in the future.
The Buccaneers will look to use this momentum to build a strong team for the upcoming season, with the Champions League and league title their main targets.
With a strong squad and experienced coaching staff, Pirates will be looking to make a deep run in the continental competition and bring silverware to the club.
