Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has confirmed a R5 million donation for Bafana Bafana's AFCON preparations.
McKenzie announced the funding on Tuesday, addressing a recent administrative error by Bafana Bafana team manager Vincent Tseka. Tseka failed to account for Teboho Mokoena’s suspension, resulting from a second yellow card in South Africa’s qualifier against Zimbabwe last June.
This oversight led to FIFA docking South Africa three points after it was revealed that Mokoena was ineligible for the subsequent match against Lesotho in March, which ended in a 3-0 defeat for South Africa.
Nonetheless, Bafana Bafana qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a victory over Rwanda in their final qualifier last month.
In light of the incident, McKenzie requested a full report from SAFA regarding the error. After reviewing the findings, he declared the matter resolved and expressed a commitment to focus on the team's preparations for AFCON.
“As we approach the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this December and January, along with next year's World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, we must rally behind our team,” stated McKenzie.
The minister appealed to the corporate sector for greater support for Bafana Bafana and other national teams, emphasizing the importance of financial backing.
