In a stunning tribute to South African rugby, Irish legend Alan Quinlan has named Rassie Erasmus the greatest rugby coach ever. Erasmus, who has been instrumental in the Springboks' recent successes, is celebrated as a titan in the sport, especially after the team's impressive performance in the Rugby Championship.
Springboks Triumph under Erasmus
The Springboks have continued to shine under Erasmus's leadership, successfully retaining their Rugby Championship title in 2025 and embarking on a European tour where they left no room for defeat. Highlights of their journey included a significant victory over France and a memorable win against Ireland in Dublin—marking their first triumph there since 2012.
A Resounding Endorsement by Quinlan
Quinlan, who has experienced the transformative coaching style of Erasmus firsthand during his time at Munster, lauded his ability to transcend conventional tactical strategies. Ahead of the 2026 Six Nations, Quinlan declared the Springboks strong contenders for an unprecedented third consecutive Rugby World Cup title in 2027 in Australia.
“South Africa will be strong favourites for the 2027 World Cup. Their squad depth is phenomenal. The country has always produced talented players, but Erasmus has transformed the system itself,” Quinlan stated, recognizing Erasmus's impact on the coaching landscape.
Reflecting on the Past
As Quinlan reflected on Ireland's journey against South Africa, he recalled a crucial moment in 2016 when Ireland claimed their first victory on South African soil. He noted the fluctuations in team performance between 2017 and their current form, emphasizing that the real difference lies in the coaching team at the helm.
“Rassie hasn’t performed miracles—many of the players facing Ireland in November 2025 were already part of the squad in 2017. There was a solid core group. However, he deserves recognition for honing the players to an exceptional standard,” Quinlan remarked, crediting Erasmus for elevating the skill and versatility of the team.
