Rassie Erasmus Eager to Break Dublin Win Drought with Springboks

Springbok Coach Rassie Erasmus Determined to Secure a Victory at Aviva Stadium

Rassie Erasmus, the celebrated coach of the Springboks, is preparing his team for a challenging match at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, a venue where he has yet to record a coaching victory. This fixture bears significance, as the Springboks have not triumphed there since 2012.

The Springboks' record at the Aviva is disheartening, having lost the last few encounters against the highly-rated Irish team, including a defeat during the 2023 Rugby World Cup group stage. Erasmus acknowledged these challenges but expressed his commitment to maintaining high standards amidst tough competition.

“If we play at our best but Ireland is better on that day, we must accept that,” he stated plainly, emphasizing the importance of effort over results. Despite their past achievements, such as notable victories over New Zealand and France, the looming match is critical for establishing momentum.

Erasmus believes a win could be defining for the season: “It would be significant for us to claim victory in Dublin.” He admitted past losses at Aviva weigh on his mind: “I’d be lying if I said it didn’t come up when planning.”

He emphasized that the game isn't about him, but rather, the greater South African representation the team embodies. Erasmus respects Ireland's disciplined approach to the game, praising their high-performance programs and technical skills that make them formidable opponents.

Reflecting on tight encounters in previous matches, he noted missed opportunities and the ultra-competitive nature of their exchanges, acknowledging the discipline issues within his squad that might complicate their preparations.

The upcoming Test also marks an important milestone for RG Snyman, who will make his 50th appearance for South Africa, albeit coming off the bench. Erasmus praised Snyman’s willingness to contribute to the team's needs.

As Saturday approaches, Rassie’s remarks encapsulate both the pressure and the promise of the challenge ahead; the Springboks are intent on shedding the burden of a decade-long winless streak in Dublin as they strive for victory.
