Towering lock RG Snyman set for 50 Test caps against Ireland
RG Snyman, the towering lock, is set to become one of the select few to earn 50 Test caps for South Africa as the Springboks prepare to take on Ireland at the Aviva Stadium this Saturday. The squad reflects only two changes from the team that triumphed over France with a score of 32-17 two weeks ago.
Following a week of rest for many players against Italy, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has reverted to a more experienced lineup to face Ireland, a team the Springboks last defeated on their home turf in 2012.
Snyman will become the third player to achieve a milestone on the Castle Lager Outgoing Tour, joining Siya Kolisi and Rassie Erasmus, who both celebrated their respective 100th Test cap and 50th cap as head coach in the match against France.
The personnel changes include Ruan Nortje moving from the bench to the starting lineup in place of Lood de Jager, with Kwagga Smith returning to the bench. Canan Moodie also transitions from center to wing, filling in for Kurt-Lee Arendse, who has returned home after sustaining a concussion.
De Jager and fellow lock Franco Mostert were not selected due to their ongoing disciplinary appeals, ensuring that team preparations remain unaffected.
Cheslin Kolbe and Cobus Reinach will both play their 49th Test matches, inching closer to Snyman's milestone.
The Springbok front row will consist of Boan Venter and Thomas du Toit alongside hooker Malcolm Marx, while Eben Etzebeth and Nortje take on the lock positions. The formidable loose trio will include Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit, and Jasper Wiese.
In the backline, Reinach will partner with Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, with Kolbe and Moodie on the wings, and Damian de Allende teaming up with Jesse Kriel in midfield. Damian Willemse will take his place at fullback.
The bench sees backup opportunities for Johan Grobelaar, Gerhard Steenekamp, and Wilco Louw in the front row, while Snyman provides lock cover, Smith covers loose forward, and Esterhuizen can play both flanker and center. Grant Williams and Manie Libbok will round out the bench as specialist backs.
“Most of this team were rested last week to ensure recovery from the physically taxing France match. It was always our plan to roll out an experienced lineup against Ireland,
