Richards Bay FC made history on Sunday, winning the KZN Premier’s Cup for the first time, as they defeated Durban City 1-0 in a hard-fought final at Umhlathuze Stadium.

Late Penalty Secures Victory

The decisive moment came in the 91st minute when Tsepo Mabua coolly converted a penalty after Siyabonga Nzama appeared to be fouled inside the box. This late goal was the standout highlight in a match that Richards Bay largely deserved to win, especially considering Durban City failed to register a single shot on target.

The first half offered little in the way of excitement, characterized by numerous turnovers in midfield as both teams struggled to find their rhythm. The game desperately needed some spark, which it briefly found in the second half when Wandile Ngema received a flick and unleashed a first-time shot, only for Ayanda Mtshali to make a quick save.

Despite that chance, the overall tempo remained low. Richards Bay attacker Nombulelo Nombengulo had another promising opportunity when he cut inside but opted for a toe-poke instead of a more controlled shot towards the far post. With the club’s first league match against Marumo Gallants scheduled on 9 August, it’s uncertain if the pitch will be ready in time. This win is particularly sweet for Richards Bay, as it marks their return home after their stadium underwent refurbishment, having been closed since August 2021.
