Richards Bay Progresses to KZN Premier’s Cup Final
Richards Bay has advanced to the final of the KZN Premier’s Cup after defeating Midlands Wonderous in a thrilling penalty shootout at Umhlathuze Stadium on Sunday. The match, which ended 1-1 after regular time, saw Richards Bay secure a 4-3 victory in the penalties.
The first half concluded without any goals, but Richards Bay eventually took the lead in the 71st minute thanks to a strike from Siyabonga Nzama. The advantage was short-lived, as Midlands Wonderous equalized in the 79th minute with a goal from Smiso Gazu, forcing the match into penalties.
Looking Ahead
Having received a bye into the semifinals, Richards Bay will now prepare to face the victor of the other semi-final clash between Durban City and AmaZulu, also played on Sunday.
Coach’s Remarks
Richards Bay coach Ronnie Gabriel reflected on their hard-fought victory:
“It was a good test for us, and a difficult game. Midlands are an up-and-coming team, eager to showcase their capabilities since they had nothing to lose. They displayed great energy and were first to everything. But we also demonstrated our determination, and in the end, we won.”
Gabriel further stated,
“It was a beneficial assignment because we plan to use a different squad in the final.”
