Riveiro Says No to Coaching Elsewhere in South Africa

Former Orlando Pirates coach, Jose Riveiro, has confirmed that he will not consider coaching another club in South Africa, stating that his time with the Buccaneers was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Riveiro joined Pirates in 2022 and spent three successful seasons with the club, winning five trophies, including three MTN8 and two Nedbank Cups.

The Spanish mentor also led the Buccaneers to the semifinals of the CAF Champions League last season.

When asked about the possibility of coaching another South African club, Riveiro was resolute.

“I think I had an opportunity to be a coach of Pirates for three seasons, an incredible time of my life,” Riveiro said.

“I said a long time ago that I’m a Buccaneer, that’s my time in South Africa, and it’s done because I will never work in another club that is not Pirates.”

The 50-year-old tactician emphasized that it’s time for Pirates to continue their evolution, which they had discussed during his tenure.

“Now it’s time for Pirates to continue their evolution, like we said it would happen a long time ago, and I will continue elsewhere as well,” he added.

After he departed from Pirates, Riveiro joined Egyptian giants Al Ahly in June. Although his stint with Al Ahly was short-lived, he gained valuable experience, particularly in the FIFA Club World Cup.

“Intense and learning a lot, having the opportunity to experience top competition like the Club World Cup, and also had a chance to work with really good players in a different space, side of the world, and culture,” he said.

“That was one more experience in my profession, I’m sure, but it was intense.”

Despite the challenges he faced with Al Ahly, Riveiro’s passion for coaching remains unwavering. After parting ways with the Egyptian club due to poor results, Riveiro is yet to find a new team.
