Rockstar Games has taken decisive action by removing a fan-created mission that simulated the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Grand Theft Auto Online. To further mitigate potential issues, the publisher has banned Kirk's name to prevent any similar content from being created.
As reported, the latest update, titled A Safehouse in the Hills, introduced on December 10, empowered players to design and share unofficial missions. Almost immediately, the mission directory was filled with content mimicking the assassination of Charlie Kirk, with a mission named "We are Charlie Kirk" gaining particular notoriety.
A recent report revealed that Rockstar has not only removed this mission but has also categorized Kirk's name in its list of prohibited terms. Insiders have mentioned that the company's internal "profanity filter" is undergoing a rebranding to highlight its purpose beyond mere obscenities, focusing on the prevention of harmful content.
Content related to the "We are Charlie Kirk" mission was spotted across platforms like YouTube and X. However, while the mission has been officially removed and related user-generated content has been suppressed, some objectives resembling Kirk's assassination still linger in the mission directory, particularly when searched with Korean language input.
Rockstar Games has yet to comment on these developments.
Charlie Kirk, 31, was a prominent right-wing activist and founder of Turning Point USA. His recent assassination in Utah while advocating against gun violence has sparked a broader debate regarding free speech and societal reactions to violent commentary.
