Costume designer Ruth E. Carter is making history once again at the Academy Awards.

The acclaimed artist has received her fifth nomination for Best Costume Design for her work in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. With this latest accolade, Carter solidifies her status as the most-nominated Black woman in Oscars history across all categories.

Carter is competing against notable talents in the costume design category, including Deborah L. Scott for Avatar: Fire and Ash, Kate Hawley for Frankenstein, Malgosia Turzanska for Hamnet, and Miyako Belizzi for Marty Supreme.

Previously, she shared the record of four nominations with Viola Davis; now, Carter stands alone with five. She is tied with Spike Lee and Morgan Freeman for the third-most nominations among Black artists overall, trailing behind Quincy Jones (seven) and Denzel Washington (nine).

The milestone for Carter comes on a momentous day for Sinners, which broke records with 16 nominations—the largest count for a single film. The film also received acting nominations for Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo, and Wunmi Mosaku.

Moreover, Sinners marks significant achievements within the industry, including Coogler being the second Black filmmaker nominated in the same year for producing, directing, and original screenplay. This follows Jordan Peele’s triple nod for Get Out in 2017, making Coogler the seventh Black director recognized in the Best Director category.

Producer Zinzi Coogler made history as well, being the first Filipina producer and the third Black woman nominated for Best Picture. Together with Ryan Coogler, they become the first Black married couple nominated in that category.

Carter’s journey as a trailblazer is well-established. In 2019, she became the first Black person to win an Oscar for costume design for her work on Marvel’s Black Panther, repeating this achievement for its sequel, Wakanda Forever, in 2022. She is the only Black woman to have won multiple Oscars in this category.

Since the inception of the Oscars in 1929, only 20 statuettes have been awarded to Black women, despite more than 3,100 grand prizes distributed. The final voting for this year’s ceremony is set to take place from February 26 to March 5.

The 98th Academy Awards will occur on March 15, airing on ABC, with Conan O’Brien as the host.
