SAFA Set to Deliver Ruling After Dispute Over Players
On Monday, Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town Spurs presented their arguments in a lengthy dispute involving players Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman. The hearings will continue on Friday, with an outcome from the South African Football Association (SAFA) anticipated next week, likely on Monday.
Initially, Velebayi and Baartman secured victories through the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC). However, Spurs contended that the players were still bound by their professional contracts despite the club's relegation to the ABC Motsepe Regional League, which is an amateur league.
Seeking to obtain a transfer fee for the players, Spurs escalated the issue to the SAFA Appeals Board following their defeat at the PSL DRC.
After the players were declared free agents by the PSL DRC, Chiefs promptly signed Velebayi and Baartman. Nonetheless, the appeal made by Spurs has prevented Chiefs from fielding either player.
Should the final ruling favor Spurs, Chiefs risks incurring penalties from SAFA, which would prevent them from utilizing Velebayi or Baartman in the Betway Premiership.
Furthermore, Spurs has also initiated similar proceedings concerning Liam Bern of AmaZulu, who was recently ruled a free agent by the PSL DRC. This appeal to the SAFA Appeals Board aims for a positive resolution for Spurs.
AmaZulu now finds itself in a comparable situation to Chiefs and is unable to play Bern until SAFA issues a ruling on his case.
