Liverpool favorites Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane found themselves embroiled in a tense confrontation during Senegal's semi-final triumph over Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Mane's decisive goal led Senegal to the final, where they will face Morocco in the capital city of Rabat.
The former teammates shared a cordial embrace before and after the match, but tensions flared when Salah fouled Mane towards the end of the first half.
Salah and Mane Continue Their Rivalry in Morocco
Mane previously triumphed alongside Salah at Liverpool with titles in the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, and Champions League. After departing for Bayern Munich in 2022, he now represents Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League.
Their fierce competition on the international level has often favored Mane and Senegal in important encounters, solidifying his status as a persistent challenge for Salah's Egypt over recent years.
Once again, Mane proved instrumental, scoring a low drive that secured Senegal's place in the AFCON final for the fourth time in three tournaments. The last time they won the championship, they overcame Egypt in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Notably, during that shootout in Cameroon, both Salah and Mane were set to take the fifth penalties, with Mane netting his and thus rendering Salah's kick unnecessary.
Wednesday's match reignited tensions as both benches reacted sharply to Salah's foul on Mane. Although the players attempted to downplay the incident, one Senegalese player, Habib Diarra, was issued a yellow card, resulting in a suspension for the final, raising concerns about the current rules regarding card accumulation toward finals.
Salah and Mane’s relationship has been described as tense despite their successful collaboration at Liverpool. Manager Jurgen Klopp noted, "They supported each other on the pitch but were never best friends. Bobby [Firmino] provided the connection between them."
After their victory, Mane reflected on the match and praised his former teammate and Egypt's squad, stating, "We faced these great players, especially Mo Salah, one of the best in the world. He always gives his best for the team. Unfortunately for him today, they lost. But I just want to say, well, this is part of football."
