Chippa United coach Thabo September has a solid strategy for the Kaizer Chiefs
The Chilli Boys are set to face Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup round of 16 at FNB Stadium this Saturday, with a coveted quarterfinal spot on the line. Coach Thabo September believes they possess a tactical advantage to outsmart their opponents.
Chippa United secured their place in this stage of the tournament by defeating Golden Arrows 2-1 in their previous match. Meanwhile, Amakhosi dominated Free Agents FC with a convincing 4-0 win to set up this anticipated clash.
After losing the 2020/21 Nedbank Cup to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila, Chippa aims to demonstrate their ability in this high-stakes competition, consistently reaching the deeper rounds in past years.
Despite recent struggles, September is determined to maintain a positive mindset as the Chiefs are eager to break their long-standing trophy drought. The experienced coach emphasized the need for a resolute approach, stating, “It’s a cup game – a once-off game so you need to approach it with the right mentality.”
He added, “We must be stubborn and selfish in terms of conceding goals; we have a good plan about what we need to do. Playing against a big team like Kaizer Chiefs is an opportunity for these players to showcase their talent.”
With the recent departure of Kwanele Kopo, September has taken full responsibility for the team’s direction and is optimistic about his selection options, despite the suspension of key player Sirgio [Jade Kammies].
“The team looks good except for Sirgio who’s suspended, but the rest of the team looks promising. We have a big pool [of players] to choose from against Chiefs,” he mentioned.
Chippa has historically had a competitive record against the Soweto giants, winning two of their last five encounters. The outcome of this match could determine whether they surpass last season's semi-final exit against Orlando Pirates.
