Mdu Shabalala steals the show in Chiefs' 4-1 win over Orbit College
In a thrilling encounter at FNB Stadium, Mdu Shabalala was the star of the evening as Kaizer Chiefs secured a commanding 4-1 victory over Orbit College in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday night, propelling them to second in the league standings.
Shabalala's influence was undeniable as he was directly involved in all four goals, earning him the title of Man of the Match.
This victory puts Amakhosi level on 22 points with Mamelodi Sundowns, who remain top on goal difference. Both teams have played 11 matches, while Sekhukhune United trails closely behind in third, one point adrift, and Orlando Pirates sits in fourth, three points behind with two games in hand, including a crucial match against Golden Arrows in Durban on Wednesday.
Chiefs' co-coaches, Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, showed their trust in Mfundo Vilakazi, giving him his third consecutive start, while Asanele Velebayi was tasked with the right flank following a notable performance against AS Simba in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Hero of the last match, Flavio da Silva, who secured a late winner against Durban City, started on the bench, while Etiosa Ighodaro retained his spot as the lone striker.
The Chiefs came into this match with an impressive home record, having lost only once at FNB Stadium this season against Sekhukhune in August, while Orbit continued to struggle on the road with just one win from five matches.
The match got off to a dream start for the Chiefs in the fourth minute when Thabiso Monyane squared the ball to Shabalala, who expertly slotted it past goalkeeper Sabelo Nkomo from the near post.
Early in the second half, Monyane nearly doubled the lead, only to have his attempt saved by Nkomo, while Ighodaro also came close after a strong run into the box but failed to convert.
The second goal came in the 61st minute; after Nkomo denied Ighodaro with a close-range save, Shabalala was quick to react to the rebound, netting his second of the night.
Despite their struggles, Orbit found a chance to come back in the 70th minute when substitute Ayanda Lukhele capitalized on a defensive mistake from Aden McCarthy to score.
However, just three minutes later, Shabalala, on a brace, assisted Vilakazi, who finished skillfully to restore the Chiefs' three-goal cushion at 3-1.
In the dying moments of the match, Flavio da Silva capped off the resounding victory in the 89th minute, finishing into an empty net after a clever touch from Shabalala deflected the ball into his path. This marked Da Silva's fourth goal of the season, establishing him as Chiefs' leading scorer thus far.
