In a bold move that has captivated South African politics, Advocate Shamila Batohi has voiced her unwavering support for Advocate Andy Mothibi as the new head of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). The current Head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), Mothibi, is set to take the reins in February 2026, following Batohi's departure when her tenure ends.

Batohi is confident that Mothibi is the perfect candidate for the role, particularly given his extensive experience and proven track record. She stated,

“Adv Mothibi is a person of integrity who comes with a great track record and knows what it means to fight for the rule of law in the country.”

Furthermore, she believes Mothibi's leadership comes at a crucial time for the NPA, which is in the midst of a significant transformation aimed at rebuilding and advancing justice.

“I have every confidence that Adv Mothibi will take the NPA to greater heights,”

Batohi emphasized.

Detailed Preparations for a New Era

In preparation for Mothibi's ascendance, Batohi has taken it upon herself to compile a comprehensive report that outlines ongoing cases and identifies various risk areas. This report will be made accessible to Mothibi, President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi, ensuring a smooth transition.

Public Sentiment: A Mixed Bag

Despite Batohi's optimistic outlook, South Africans took to social media to express mixed feelings regarding her endorsement. While some appreciate her faith in Mothibi, many are skeptical, questioning the sincerity of her praise. Comments include:

“Getting praised by the incompetent Batohi raises a lot of red flags about your ability to do the job,”

said Mpho Malope. Others echoed similar sentiments, with Francois Erasmus arguing,

“He is just as incompetent. An ANC pick to protect cadres.”

Overall, skepticism reigns among the public regarding the NPA's future under Mothibi's leadership.

A Presidential Defense

In response to public outcry, the presidency has defended the appointment, stating that President Ramaphosa acted within his legal rights and utilized his discretion in choosing Mothibi, who was the best fit after rigorous evaluations of other candidates.
