DURBAN, KWAZULU-NATAL — In a dramatic turn of events, two murder suspects met their fate in a gunfire exchange with the South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal on January 7, 2026.

The police had received crucial intel regarding the suspects' location and moved to engage them in a firefight. The brave officers faced gunfire from the suspects but quickly returned fire, leading to the demise of the criminals. Two firearms were recovered from the scene, underscoring the violent nature of their crimes.

Similar Shootouts with SAPS in KZN

This incident adds to several recent confrontations across the province. On September 10, 2025, officers shot and killed a suspect linked to multiple murders, including the tragic death of a police officer during a road rage altercation. This murderer was connected to seven other homicides.

Just days later, on September 15, a paroled killer was also shot dead in Mtuzini after he engaged police during a cash-in-transit heist. He attempted to escape but ultimately met a similar fate.

Additional shootouts on November 19, 2025, resulted in two more suspects being fatally shot by SAPS in separate incidents across Folweni and Umlazi, demonstrating the persistent threat posed by violent criminals in the area.

Crime in KwaZulu-Natal Drops

Despite these shocking events, there is a glimmer of hope as Major General Phumelele Makoba, the province's Deputy Police Commissioner, revealed to Premier Thami Ntuli that crime rates are on the decline. Between October 15 and December 30, 2025, KwaZulu-Natal reported a remarkable decrease of 2,676 contract crimes.

Importantly, the figures indicated a drop in murder and sexual offences, along with a significant decline in theft-related crimes. However, there has been a troubling rise in attempted sexual offences, which authorities are now prioritizing.

“We are committed to making our streets safer, but we must remain vigilant against the rising complexities of crime,” said Major General Makoba.

This latest shooting incident serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing battle against crime in South Africa, while also showcasing the efforts of law enforcement to uphold safety in KwaZulu-Natal.
