Amajita goalkeeper Fletcher Smythe-Lowe expressed his gratitude and admiration for his teammates after their exit from the FIFA World Cup U20 on Wednesday in the last 16 against Colombia in Chile.
Smythe-Lowe, who had a remarkable journey with Amajita, starting from the COSAFA Cup U20 in Namibia to the AFCON U20 in Morocco and finally the World Cup, praised his teammates for their camaraderie and dedication.
“Playing with this group of players was amazing, from COSAFA all the way to AFCON – and winning the AFCON with these amazing people and being in the World Cup with them, it’s an honour and privilege,” Smythe-Lowe said.
“To wake up every day and train with these players, listen to our head coach and all other coaches, and be treated well by the medical team and treated well by everybody here, it was something special and it’s been amazing.”
Smythe-Lowe’s journey with Amajita has been nothing short of remarkable.
After winning the COSAFA Cup U20 in Namibia, where he was named the goalkeeper of the tournament and included in the team of the tournament, the team went on to win the AFCON U20 in Morocco, with Smythe-Lowe repeating his impressive performance and winning the same award.
Although their World Cup campaign ended in the last 16 against Colombia on Wednesday, Smythe-Lowe’s performances were commendable, and he was part of the team that won two games against New Caledonia and the United States in the group stage.
When asked about the toughest game of the tournament, Smythe-Lowe said, “I think that the game against Colombia was difficult, against France it was difficult, and actually all these games were difficult.”
The African best U20 goalkeeper added that getting to the World Cup was not easy, given the immense heat and pressure.
Smythe-Lowe also revealed that the 5-0 win against New Caledonia was perhaps the best game.
“Getting here to the World Cup is not easy because there’s so much heat and pressure,” he stated.
“Then the 5-0 win against New Caledonia, I think it was the best one, and maybe people can say we were playing against a weaker opponent, but we played very well, and that was the best game.”
The 18-year-old Smythe-Lowe, alongside two of his teammates, Siyabonga Mabena and Lazola Maku, will still be eligible to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2027 if they continue to perform well with their teams.
