The live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda by Sony Pictures will be streaming exclusively on Netflix after its theatrical release, as confirmed by both companies. This announcement comes as part of a broader Pay-1 deal between Netflix and Sony.
The multi-year agreement, starting this year, allows Netflix to host several of Sony's upcoming films, including the highly anticipated Zelda movie. Other titles following this deal include The Nightingale and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, as well as new projects from director Sam Mendes.
Reportedly valued at $7 billion, the deal was originally considered by Sony for a partnership with Amazon, but Netflix ultimately secured the rights. Notably, the Zelda film features Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link, with current filming taking place in New Zealand.
Notable figures involved in the production include Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and Marvel's Avi Arad, with Wes Ball directing and Derek Connolly penning the screenplay.
However, the Zelda movie is not the first from Nintendo; the company has plans for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in 2026, following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Zelda movie is slated for 2027, marking the beginning of Nintendo’s ongoing strategy for a series of film releases.
