Springboks Aim to Dominate Breakdown Against Italy This Weekend

Springboks Ready for Crucial Clash with Italy at Allianz Stadium

As the Springboks prepare for their upcoming match against Italy, a revamped lineup will take the spotlight at Allianz Stadium in Turin. With multiple new combinations in the forward pack, particularly in the front row, seasoned players such as captain Siya Kolisi and Franco Mostert are expected to provide steadiness and instill confidence among their teammates ahead of the encounter.

Captain Kolisi, now a member of the elite hundred-club, stressed the significance of their preparation throughout the week to alleviate nerves as match day approaches. He remarked, “It’s the work we’ve done in the week – coach Daan has been working us in the scrum, coach Deon in the lineouts, Duane in the contesting.”

“We’ve had rigorous training sessions, with full contact work focusing on mauling and defensive strategies. It’s in these moments that we bond more profoundly than through mere conversation. Confidence comes from knowing we are prepared, and it’s crucial for the senior players to lead by example. We feel good as a collective.”

The Italian team's expertise at the breakdown is widely recognized, and opposition teams understand the need to focus in this critical area to prevent Italian dominance. Kolisi acknowledged, “This has been a key focus point for us this week. They performed well against us when they last toured South Africa. We’ve done our homework, and we will ensure that we manage this aspect properly on the weekend.”

Following their recent victory over France, Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick discussed the coaching staff's efforts to maintain the players' high performance level. “It’s a tough week – we’re facing Italy, who are coming off a strong result against Australia, which adds motivation for our players,” Stick noted.

He also highlighted that players such as Pollard and Canan are eager to seize their opportunities. “We play not just for ourselves but for the 60 million people back home. The players are driven as it’s a significant game, and Italy is improving. Those yet to feature are excited about making their mark. Underestimating them would be a mistake, but we are prepared,” Stick added.

Captain Kolisi, among a select few to lead teams to consecutive World Cup victories, emphasized the importance of guiding a team with several changes. “We’ve reviewed our past matches against Italy, and we are aware of what’s needed,” he explained.

Furthermore, Kolisi underlined the importance of stability in pivotal positions, stating, “Handré will direct play while Canan brings a different energy when leading from the back. The return of Edwill is beneficial, and Kurt-Lee and Gaza provide continuity after last week's game.”

However, Kolisi made it clear where the focus should lie. “The pack is vital this weekend. We understand our responsibilities, especially at the breakdown, which falls under the forwards’ jurisdiction. We must be ready for this challenge.”
