Springboks Celebrate Surreal Back-to-Back Rugby Championship Triumph

Springbok Hooker Malcolm Marx Reflects on Historic Back-to-Back Rugby Championship Wins

The Springboks achieved a remarkable milestone by clinching their second consecutive Rugby Championship title, narrowly defeating Argentina 29-27 at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, London. This victory marks the first time in history that the Boks have secured back-to-back titles in the southern hemisphere competition.

Despite the All Blacks winning their final match against Australia with a bonus-point victory of 28-14, the Springboks finished the tournament tied on 19 log points, securing the championship through a decisive result against the Pumas.

“It’s a bit surreal, to be honest – I don’t know how to express it,” remarked Marx, who scored two crucial tries during the match. He expressed immense gratitude for the lessons learned and victories earned over the past weeks.

“I’m just extremely grateful for everything that’s happened over the past couple of weeks, the lessons learned, and the victories we registered. It will probably sink in over the next couple of days what we achieved, but that said, there’s still a lot of hard work ahead. There are still lots of aspects we can get better at,” Marx stated.

The hooker acknowledged the unwavering support from fans, stating, “I’m lost for words. I’m extremely grateful for the support from the fans that came out from far and wide, no matter where we played. They supported us all the way, and that’s special for the team and coaching staff.”

Marx also commended Argentina for their resilience, noting, “We definitely expected them to come back like that. They are a proud nation and a great rugby team. It was a tough match, and the closeness of the scoreline showed it.”

As the Springboks prepare to return home, a segment of the team will head back to South Africa on Sunday, while others are joining their respective clubs. Coach Rassie Erasmus is set to announce his squad for the upcoming five-match November tour, with players expected to reconvene later in October.
