Springboks Make Strong Return in Rugby Championship with Historic Win

Rassie Erasmus Claims Springboks Are ‘Back In The Mix’ After Victory Over All Blacks

The Springboks showcased a spectacular performance against the All Blacks at Sky Stadium on Saturday, marking a significant comeback in the Rugby Championship. Rassie Erasmus stated the team is now "back in the mix" following their commanding win.

In a remarkable display, the Springboks secured their largest victory over their rivals, scoring four out of six tries in the second half.

After falling short in the previous encounter, losing 24-17 at Eden Park, the team knew they had to bring their best game to compete. Mistakes from that match, including turnovers and lost lineouts, were corrected, allowing them to dominate this time.

Despite injuries to key players like fullback Aphelele Fassi and two-try scorer Cheslin Kolbe, the Springboks outperformed Scott Robertson's side decisively. Other tries were contributed by Damian Willemse, Kwagga Smith, RG Snyman, and Andre Esterhuizen.

“We can’t celebrate too much because of the respect we have for them,” said Erasmus post-match. “We are now part of the Rugby Championship race. It’s nice to win, but we need to stay grounded.”

This victory not only positions the Springboks back in contention for the title but also secures the Freedom Cup, making history by defeating the All Blacks in both encounters for the first time consecutively.

The triumph propels the Springboks to number one in the world rankings and second in the Rugby Championship with 10 points, trailing Australia by just a point.

Looking ahead, the Springboks will face Argentina, currently in fourth place, in two upcoming matches: one at Kings Park Stadium later this month and another in London early October. Meanwhile, New Zealand will play Australia in their remaining fixtures.

“They gave us 57-0 [in 2017], but this is satisfying,” added Erasmus alongside captain Siya Kolisi. “Though we celebrate tonight, reality returns tomorrow as we prepare for Argentina who will challenge our scrums and lineouts.”

“We’re currently second in the Rugby Championship, and the next two matches will be crucial. New Zealand didn’t boast after their win last week, and while today’s victory is significant, we must shift our focus to what lies ahead.”
