Springbok assistant coach Tony Brown and Andre Esterhuizen expect an epic encounter against Argentina in their penultimate Rugby Championship match in Durban.
The match, set to kick off at 17h10 at Hollywoodbets Kings Park, is the final home game of the season for the Springboks, with both teams in contention for the championship title.
All four competing teams, the Wallabies, Springboks, All Blacks, and Pumas, are still in the running for the title, promising an exciting conclusion to the pool rounds.
“Our performance against the All Blacks was solid, but the Pumas are a different challenge altogether,” stated Brown.
“Having already beaten the All Blacks and Wallabies, we must be in the right mindset and strive for dominance to ensure a successful outing.”
“It is crucial we perfect our game plan this week. There were glimpses of strong rugby in our previous matches, yet we aim to deliver a consistent 80-minute performance, capitalizing on our opportunities,” he added.
Esterhuizen echoed these sentiments: “The Pumas are an excellent team that utilizes ball movement effectively. Our primary challenge will be to counter their loose play and maintain high-quality performance until the final whistle.”
“As Tony mentioned, they have triumphed over all three competing nations in the past year, demonstrating their capability; they are a formidable opponent.”
“Facing them is always challenging due to their passionate nature as a rugby nation, coupled with their significant progress in recent seasons. I expect a closely contested match with a fierce battle among the forwards. The team that manages possession, converts chances effectively, and excels in aerial confrontations is likely to secure victory.”
Brown and Esterhuizen acknowledge that the Springboks still have areas requiring improvement.
“Participating in that match against the All Blacks was remarkable, yet we recognize there’s more to work on, particularly in executing our opportunities,” Esterhuizen stated.
“The one takeaway from that game was the potential we display when we adhere to our game plan, emphasizing the importance of consistency going forward.”
Brown praised Argentinean coach Felipe Contepomi for his contributions: “He has effectively continued the legacy Michael Cheika created. Their flair in play combined with a robust pack makes them a challenging adversary.”
Addressing the return of flyhalf Tomas Albornoz, Brown emphasized his threat on the field. “Both their flyhalves possess quality skills. In my view, Albornoz was a standout player for them last year, being a critical asset with excellent decision-making skills and a bright future.”
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus is scheduled to announce his matchday squad to face Argentina on Tuesday.
