The Springboks Set to Host England, Scotland, and Wales in New Nations Championship
The exciting new Nations Championship is set to kick off in July 2026, featuring a northern invasion of the southern hemisphere as the Springboks welcome England, Scotland, and Wales. This innovative tournament, a collaborative effort between SANZAAR and Six Nations Rugby, aims to redefine the international rugby landscape with the top Test teams vying for the title of the world's best.
In this inaugural tournament, countries from the Southern Hemisphere—South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and Argentina—alongside invited teams Japan and Fiji, will contest against the Six Nations teams (England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales) across two international windows in July and November.
The competition will feature a total of six rounds, culminating in a unique Finals Weekend hosted at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, in London next November. The Springboks will face England on July 4, Scotland on July 11, and Wales on July 18 during their home series, with subsequent matches against Italy, France, and Ireland confirmed for November 2026 in Europe, completing their fixtures against all Six Nations teams.
The Finals Weekend on November 27-29, 2026, promises exhilarating entertainment with its double-header format across three days. This pioneering element of the tournament adds a dramatic climax where every fixture holds significance for all participating teams and fans.
As the competition unfolds, the leading teams from both hemispheres will compete to determine the inaugural champion, making every point crucial for their group standings. The Nations Championship will not be held in 2027 due to the Rugby World Cup, with plans to reverse the schedule in 2028, bringing France, Ireland, and Italy to South Africa while facing England, Scotland, and Wales in the UK.
SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer expressed excitement about the transformative nature of the tournament: "Every Test now carries more weight than just rankings, highlighting the competitive landscape on a global scale." He emphasized that facing England, Scotland, and Wales would provide tough preparations for the forthcoming rivalry with the All Blacks.
Details regarding venues and kick-off times for the Boks' home matches will be announced by SA Rugby in due time. The tournament's structure allows for points to be awarded based on match outcomes and will influence the fixture dynamics leading to the Finals Weekend, marking a new chapter in rugby history.
Brendan Morris, SANZAAR CEO, hailed the Championship's establishment as a historic moment for the sport, enabling direct competition between the best teams in Europe and the Southern Hemisphere biennially, while Six Nations Rugby CEO Tom Harrison highlighted the opportunity the Championship presents to reshape rugby's future.
As excitement builds for the tournament's debut, the collaboration between these major rugby unions aims to elevate the sport on a global stage, paving the way for sustained growth and a thrilling new era in international rugby.
