Stellenbosch FC’s CAF Confederations Cup Journey Continues
Stellenbosch FC propelled themselves into the CAF Confederation Cup group stages after a commanding 4-1 victory in the Second Qualifying Round at Athlone Stadium.
The South African team aimed for a strong showing in the tournament, and their ambitions were evident from the kickoff.
Just 11 minutes in, Sanele Barns rattled the top right-hand corner of the post, followed by Thabo Moloisane hitting the same upright shortly thereafter, signaling Stellenbosch's early intent.
The breakthrough came in the 18th minute when Thato Khiba converted a penalty after being fouled by the 15 de Agosto goalkeeper, placing the ball into the bottom right corner.
Stellenbosch's goal ignited some urgency in the Equato-Guinean side, who showed their first notable attack in the 27th minute, resulting in a corner that went unused.
Despite the visitors' attempt for a comeback, the Western Cape side maintained their dominance, creating opportunities as the first half wound down.
As halftime loomed, Barns posed another threat with a clever ball into the six-yard box, although Ander de Jong failed to connect.
With less than a minute played in the second half, Barns finally found the net with a driven shot across goal to widen their lead.
De Jong then added the third goal with a composed finish, skillfully placed in the bottom left corner.
The visitors breached the Stellies' defense in the 80th minute, scoring a consolation goal to momentarily lessen the deficit.
Chumani Butsaka capped the scoring in the final minutes at 88, reinstating a three-goal cushion for Stellenbosch.
Following this decisive win, Stellies aspire to build upon this momentum for future successes, both in domestic and continental competitions.
