The Duffer brothers, the creative force behind Stranger Things, revealed that the final showdown of the series drew inspiration from the popular video game Baldur's Gate 3. Matt Duffer was reportedly engaged in gameplay while conceptualizing the climactic battle.
Warning: Spoilers for the series finale ahead.
"We were thinking about D&D and I was playing Baldur's Gate 3 at the time," Duffer shared in an interview, emphasizing the importance of teamwork among characters to defeat the mind flayer. He noted that each character had resolved their individual arcs, making them the ultimate unified team ready for battle.
Duffer added, "They each have their own individual skills, right? That’s where I go back to Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur's Gate. That’s how you take down these seemingly unstoppable monsters. Many video game tropes influenced that final confrontation."
The climactic scene features the main cast battling a massive, monstrous entity in the desolate expanse of Dimension X, a physical representation of the mind flayer controlled by Henry Creel, also known as Vecna.
The connection between Baldur's Gate 3 and Stranger Things is evident, as both properties draw heavily from the Dungeons & Dragons universe and share plot elements involving mind flayers. However, while the term is metaphorical in Stranger Things, BG3 presents an actual mind flayer threat, culminating in a climactic battle against a mega-mind.
While it's uncertain whether Duffer was inspired by the game solely for fun or deeper creativity, he and his brother have previously stated that their involvement with D&D is not as extensive as it seems. Perhaps Baldur's Gate 3 served as a more relatable gateway into the world of tabletop gaming.
Duffer did not specify other video game inspirations for the final battle, leading to speculation among fans, with some drawing parallels between the mind flayer spider creature and the corpser from the Gears of War series, as well as references to Sony's classic 'giant enemy crab' meme.
