Sundowns Claim Spot in CAF Champions League Group Stage with Commanding Victory

Mamelodi Sundowns have advanced to the group stages of the CAF Champions League following their 7-1 aggregate victory over Nigerian side Remo Stars at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Brazilians, who held a significant advantage after a 5-1 win in the first leg in Nigeria, sealed their progression with a 2-0 home victory.

The match began at a frenetic pace, with Sundowns creating numerous chances in the opening 20 minutes.

Their high-intensity pressing paid off when Portuguese midfielder Nuno Santos scored a stunning long-range goal, leaving Remo’s goalkeeper Adebiyi Obassa with no chance.

Sundowns continued to dominate, and just before halftime, Peter Shalulile headed in a perfectly weighted cross from Aubrey Modiba to double the lead.

In the second half, Sundowns started strongly, creating several scoring opportunities.

However, despite coach Miguel Cardoso introducing dynamic players like Bathusi Aubaas and Lebo Mothiba to bolster the midfield and attack, the Brazilians were unable to add to their tally.

The match ended 2-0 in favor of Sundowns, securing their spot in the group stages for a record 11th time in a row, equaling Al Ahly.

As a result, Sundowns will be the sole South African representative in the Champions League this season, following Orlando Pirates’ elimination on Saturday to St Eloi Lupopo.

Meanwhile, Stellenbosch and Kaizer Chiefs will represent South Africa in the CAF Confederation Cup after both teams advanced to the group stage on Sunday.

The draw for both competitions will take place on 3 November in Johannesburg, where Sundowns will learn their group stage opponents.
