Sundowns Drop Points in Stalemate Against Gallants

Mamelodi Sundowns Miss Opportunities in 1-1 Draw with Marumo Gallants

Mamelodi Sundowns faced a setback in their quest for the top of the Betway Premiership after settling for a 1-1 draw against Marumo Gallants at Dr Molemela Stadium on Wednesday evening.

This result leaves Sundowns in second place on the table with 15 points from seven matches, trailing log leaders Sekhukhune United, who ascended to the top following their victory over Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday.

Entering the match with confidence from a 3-0 win over Magesi, Sundowns struggled to convert their early dominance into goals against a Gallants side that had been inactive since the FIFA international break.

Initially, Sundowns started the match with vigor, crafting multiple scoring chances within the opening 15 minutes but failed to capitalize. Teboho Mokoena came close to scoring in the 25th minute, only to be denied by Gallants’ goalkeeper, Washington Arubi.

The breakthrough came in the 28th minute when Iqraam Rayners found the net with a header, courtesy of an assist from Chilean midfielder Marcello Allende.

However, Gallants didn’t take long to respond, equalizing in the 35th minute when Phillip Ndlondlo’s attempt caused Keanu Cupido to score an own goal.

As the first half ended level at 1-1, Mokoena had another chance to restore Sundowns’ lead just before the interval, but once again, Arubi was up to the task.

In the second half, coach Miguel Cardoso made tactical adjustments early on, bringing on Aubrey Modiba and Tashreeq Matthews for Devine Lunga and Rayners. These changes initially energized Sundowns’ offense, generating numerous scoring opportunities, although they couldn’t find the back of the net.

A further substitution in the 62nd minute saw the introduction of promising talent Kutlwano Letlhaku aimed at bolstering the attack.

Just eight minutes later, Khuliso Mudau was brought on, marking his return to the season following a standoff with the club.

Despite the fresh legs and experienced striker Lebo Mothiba's entrance, Sundowns could not penetrate Gallants’ defense and secure a late winner.

Looking ahead, Sundowns will be eager to return to winning ways when they face Durban City at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
