Tinkler Expresses Regret Over Missing Out on Goalkeeper Keet

Sekhukhune United Coach Tinkler's Disappointment Over Keet

Sekhukhune United head coach Eric Tinkler has confirmed his desire to sign veteran goalkeeper Darren Keet. Unfortunately, the transfer did not materialize as Sekhukhune had already finalized a deal for Samuel Sapunga from Polokwane City on a pre-contract.

Sources indicate that Tinkler, who previously collaborated with Keet at Cape Town City, aimed for a reunion with the experienced shot-stopper ahead of the Betway Premiership season. However, once the team secured Sapunga's contract, attention shifted to securing Toaster Nsabata.

Tinkler's High Praise for Keet

Tinkler has consistently expressed admiration for Keet, labeling the 36-year-old as the most dependable goalkeeper in South Africa, especially regarding aerial challenges. This sentiment was echoed by Durban City coach Gavin Hunt, who recently joined the team.

“I believe Darren is by far the best keeper in South Africa when it comes to handling crosses,” stated Tinkler. “That’s Darren’s bread and butter. However, there were reasons why Darren didn’t join us that I prefer not to disclose.”

As Sekhukhune faced challenges, Keet signed with Durban City, where he has been instrumental under coach Gavin Hunt, contributing to the team's progression to the Carling Knockout quarter-finals following a decisive 4-1 victory over Polokwane City.

Sekhukhune's Goalkeeping Troubles

Meanwhile, Babino Noko continues to experience difficulties in goal. Inside sources reveal that some club officials regret the decision to part ways with Ali Badra Sangaré, the Ivory Coast international and Africa Cup of Nations champion, whose contract expiration at the end of the previous season was viewed as a significant loss.

The club re-signed Nsabata from ZESCO United in Zambia; however, his recent performances, including a 3-1 defeat to Golden Arrows in the Carling Knockout round of 16, have prompted criticism.

Renaldo Leaner, who has been sidelined for six matches, contributed to the team's defensive woes, as Sekhukhune faces a string of costly goals. The squad anticipates Leaner's return following the FIFA break.

Remarkably, Nsabata had been released by Sekhukhune in previous seasons before his return this year.

Limited Opportunities for Sapunga

Reports suggest that Tinkler has reservations regarding Samuel Sapunga's capabilities. This could account for the Equatorial Guinea international's minimal involvement, having participated in only one match this season.

Keet Prospers Amidst Sekhukhune's Struggles

While Sekhukhune's goalkeeping situation remains precarious, Keet continues to shine at Durban City, delivering impressive performances that support his team's advancement in the Carling Knockout.
