Sekhukhune United coach Eric Tinkler believes his team is on the right path to win the league after their victory against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Tuesday.
The win saw Babina Noko return to the top of the log with 16 points in six games, having won five matches and drawn one. Veterans Thabang Monare and Bradley Grobler, who scored a brace, were the standout performers for Sekhukhune United.
“I think we’re on the right path to win the league because of the results we’re achieving,” Tinkler said after the match.
“Everybody spoke about Sundowns being poor, but Sundowns were on top of the league for a couple of hours.
“The fact is that we’re going to compete against Mamelodi Sundowns, even though they’ve gone through tough times, but that’s not the reason for their poor results.”
Tinkler emphasized that his team boasts talented and fan-favorite players who are capable of winning the league.
“I believe we have good players and fan-favorite players to win the league,” he added.
“So, my job as a coach and everyone in the club is to close that gap between us and Sundowns, and that’s what we’re going to do.”
The former Orlando Pirates coach highlighted that narrowing the gap between Sekhukhune and Sundowns is the primary objective.
“That’s the main objective we had before the season to say we need to close that gap, and we ensured that we start collecting points early to make life not easy for Sundowns,” he emphasized.
“But at the same time, I think for me to say we’re going to compete for the league, it cannot be a good thing because it’s still early and a lot can happen in the space of time.”
With their next match against Golden Arrows at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, Sekhukhune will aim to continue their impressive form and maintain their position at the top of the log.
